New York Times 'hit by hackers from China'

New York Times building (March 2011) The New York Times said the attacks targeted its Shanghai bureau chief

Related Stories

Hackers from China have "persistently" infiltrated the New York Times for the last four months, the US paper says.
It said the attacks coincided with its report into claims that the family of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao had amassed a multi-billion dollar fortune.
The hackers used methods which have been "associated with the Chinese military" to target the emails of the report's writer, the paper said.
China's foreign ministry dismissed the accusations as "groundless".
"To arbitrarily assert and to conclude without hard evidence that China participated in such hacking attacks is totally irresponsible," said spokesman Hong Lei.
"China is also a victim of hacking attacks. Chinese laws clearly forbid hacking attacks, and we hope relevant parties takes a responsible attitude on this issue."
Beijing has been accused by several governments, foreign companies and organisations of carrying out extensive cyber espionage for many years, seeking to gather information and to control China's image.
'China-based subterfuge' According to the Times, the hackers first broke into their computer system in September, as the report on Mr Wen was nearing completion.
The report, which was dismissed as a "smear" by the Chinese government, said Mr Wen's relatives had amassed assets worth at least $2.7bn (£1.7bn) through business dealings. It did not accuse the Chinese premier of wrongdoing.
China is sensitive about reports on its leaders, particularly when it comes to their wealth.

Alleged China-based hacks

  • China was widely believed to be the source of major cyber attacks between 2006 and 2011 targeting 72 organisations including the International Olympic Committee, the UN and security firms
  • In 2011, Google said hackers based in Jinan province had compromised personal email accounts of hundreds of top US officials, military personnel and journalists
  • South Korea blamed Chinese hackers for stealing data from 35 million accounts on a popular social network in July last year
  • Chinese-based computers seized "full functional control" of computers at Nasa in 2011, the US body said
  • In 2011 US media reported that Chinese-based hackers were suspected of a "significant" cyber attack on defence firm Lockheed Martin.
  • Coca-cola says its systems were breached in 2009 by Beijing-backed hackers, while it was trying to buy China's Huiyuan Juice Group
  • The US Pentagon said it was hacked by the Chinese military in 2007
  • China says hacking is illegal under its laws and that it is a victim of such attacks itself
The New York Times said the hacking initially focussed on the computers of David Barboza, the paper's bureau chief in Shanghai who wrote the report, and one of his predecessors, Jim Yardley.
Internet security firm Mandiant, which was hired by the Times to trace the attack, followed the hackers' movements for four months, to try to establish a pattern and block them.
The hackers installed malware which enabled them to access any computer using the New York Times network, steal the password of every employee, and access 53 personal computers, mostly outside the Times offices.
They found the hackers began working for the most part at 08:00 Beijing time. They have not been able to establish how exactly the hackers broke into the system, but believe it may have been through a so-called spear-phishing attack, where an employee clicked on an email or link containing malicious code.
The security firm found that in an attempt to hide the origin of the attack, it had been routed through computers in US universities which, the paper said, "matches the subterfuge used in many other attacks that Mandiant has tracked to China".
The Times said experts had found that the attacks "started from the same university computers used by the Chinese military to attack United States military contractors in the past".
Mandiant's chief security officer, Richard Bejtlich, said that "if you look at each attack in isolation, you can't say, 'This is the Chinese military'," but that the similar patterns and targets of the attacks indicated a connection.
Cannot play media.
The BBC's Damian Grammaticas: "On the day it (NY Times) published, its computers came under attack"
"When you see the same group steal data on Chinese dissidents and Tibetan activists, then attack an aerospace company, it starts to push you in the right direction," he said.
The paper said no personal data of staff or customers was stolen and that no attempt was made to shut down its website.
"They could have wreaked havoc on our systems," said chief information officer Marc Frons. But he said what they appeared to be looking for were "the names of people who might have provided information to Mr Barboza".
There was also no evidence that sensitive emails or files on the Wen family had been accessed, or that the intruders had sought information unrelated to the Wen family, the paper said.

Webcam Spy 'Sextorted' Hundreds of Women, FBI Says

A man who may have coerced as many as 350 women to strip for him via webcam has been arrested by the FBI on federal computer-hacking charges.
According to federal authorities, Karen "Gary" Kazaryan, 27, of Glendale, Calif., broke into email, Skype and Facebook accounts.
He then searched for and stole risqué private photos and other information and changed users' passwords, a Department of Justice statement said.
The statement also said Kazaryn masqueraded as friends of his victims, pretending to be a woman and persuading them to remove their clothes while connected via Skype video chat.
If a victim refused, Kazaryan would allegedly blackmail her into compliance by threatening to post the stolen risqué images online — a classic example of "sextortion."
Don't make it easy for the next one
The DOJ press release says Kazaryan "gained unauthorized access to — in other words, hacked into — the victims' accounts."
Given the loose definition of hacking under federal criminal code, this could mean Kazaryan simply guessed or reset their passwords.
That's easy to do when people post personal details on their Facebook pages that are answers to identity-challenge questions such as "What was your mother's maiden name?"
The press release said Kazaryan has been indicted on 15 counts of computer intrusion and 15 counts of aggravated identity theft.
If convicted, he faces up to 105 years in federal prison.
[How to Avoid Becoming a Victim of Sextortion]
Digital invasion of privacy
There have been many incidents of hackers using webcams to spy on victims.
Last year, several computer-rental companies were caught using webcam images to extort past-due payments from customers.
In 2010, a Santa Ana, Calif., man was busted for a webcam-sextortion scheme similar to Kazaryan's.
The following year, a Fullerton, Calif., computer technician was caught putting spyware on women's Apple laptops, then persuading the women to take the laptops into the bathroom while they took showers.
Webcam users can best protect themselves from spyware by making sure they're behind a secure firewall and using anti-virus software that won't allow an attacker to clandestinely turn on a user's webcam.
A lower-tech solution is to simply put black tape over your computer's webcam when you're not using it.
It's also important to remember that not everyone online is always whom they seem to be.
A message that appears to come from a trusted friend could really be from a creep trying to glean information or images that you normally wouldn't give up to strangers.

'Even if it's a mistake, it's my mistake': Rihanna opens up on her reconciliation with Chris Brown, insisting it's 'different now'

She left many fans horrified when she reconciled with on/off boyfriend Chris Brown last year.

However, Rihanna is unrepentant about her decision to forgive him for beating her nearly four years ago, admitted she decided to put her emotions first.
Speaking to the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine, the 24-year-old insists their relationship is 'different now' compared to when they originally dated in 2007-2009.

In the interview, Rihanna appears to officially confirm they are an item again following Chris's split from model Karrueche Tran last October.
After Chris was arrested for assaulting Rihanna on the way home from a pre-Grammys party in Los Angeles in February 2009, she admitted she want to punish him, even though she still loved him.

She explains: 'I wanted him to know what it felt like to lose me. To feel the consequences of that. So when that (stuff) came back it hit me like a ton of bricks.
'Like, God, you’ve got to be kidding right now. But I got real with myself, and I just couldn’t bury the way I felt.'

When she decided to give Chris another chance, she knew she would be criticised by fans, friends and the media, but decided to follow her heart.
She said: 'But I decided it was more important for me to be happy, and I wasn’t going to let anybody’s opinion get in the way of that.
'Even if it’s a mistake, it’s my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I’d rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it.'
She insists the relationship between the pair is very different to when they first dated - when Chris was still a teenager.

She explained: 'When you add up the pieces from the outside, it’s not the cutest puzzle in the world. You see us walking somewhere, driving somewhere, in the studio, in the club, and you think you know.
'But it’s different now. We don’t have those types of arguments anymore. We talk about (stuff). We value each other. We know exactly what we have now, and we don’t want to lose that.
'"He doesn't have the luxury of f**king up again, That's just not an option.
'I can't say that nothing else will ever go wrong. But I'm pretty solid in the knowing that he's disgusted by that. And I wouldn't have gone this far if I ever thought that was a possibility.'
Chris remains on probation following the incident, which saw him convicted of felony assault.

Touchdown for Balotelli! Bad boy arrives to start life with AC Milan (but fans who bought No 9 shirts find out he will wear No 45!)

Mario Balotelli landed in Italy this afternoon and paraded the AC Milan shirt after turning his back on Manchester City.
The Italian striker touched down at Malpensa Airport just after 3pm and spoke to reporters as he left the plane.
‘I wanted play for Milan since long time ago,’ he said. ‘Before I played for another team and I couldn’t come. Now I had this chance and I ran.

‘I started this season with City not very well and I hope to change the situation here. I felt inside me that one day I would have come.

‘I took important decisions and I hope they will be lucky for me and for Milan.’

He will have a medical at Milan and is expected to be officially unveiled later this week.

'Balo is back’ screamed the front of La Gazzetta dello Sport. Balotelli is back in Milan and in line to make his debut in a friendly on Thursday against an amateur side from his home town of Brescia.
Balotelli is still expected to have his medical today but it is possible the deal will not be finalised until deadline day, with Italy’s transfer window closing earlier than the one in England, at 7pm.
The 22-year-old is expected to have dinner with Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi tonight and a press conference has now been scheduled for tomorrow.

Excitement is such that fans of the Rossoneri have already snapped up over a thousand shirts with ‘Balotelli’ and No 9 on the back.
The problem is that Brazilian Alexandre Pato has the No 9 shirt – despite leaving for Corinthians earlier this month – and Serie A rules state that a shirt number cannot be reallocated, so instead he is set to wear the No 45 shirt, just as he did at Manchester City and Milan’s city rivals Inter.
The 22-year-old wears his favourite No 9 shirt for the Italian national team and he could be tempted to follow in the footsteps of another former Inter striker Ivan Zamorano who could not have the No 9 shirt, so had No 18 with a + sign in the middle.
Robbie Fowler did the same when he signed for Leeds and missed out on the No 9 shirt that he had worn at Liverpool, so opted for the No 27.

City manager Roberto Mancini claimed the Italy forward could go on to become one of the best players in the world following his move.
‘I think that they are very close (to a deal),’ he said. ‘We are also so sad because Mario was an important player for us.
‘He is a fantastic player but I think for him this could be an important chance to go back to Italy and play for another top club like Milan.
‘I hope he can continue to improve because he can become one of the world's best players.’
Mancini believes Balotelli did ‘very well’ in his two-and-a-half years with City, although concedes this season has proved more difficult.

He was also quick to deny suggestions the departure was related to difficulties in dealing with the forward.
‘No, no, no, not for me,’ he said. ‘For me, Mario was like another of my children.
‘Mario is this but you can be upset with him sometimes.
‘The club told me they had this from Milan. I spoke with Mario and I think he wanted this.
‘I think for him after three years in England to come back to Italy will be good for him.’
Speaking after the game at QPR, Mancini said: 'It is difficult because I lost one important striker and that could be important in the next 14 games.
'But it is important for Mario - to be back in Italy, back with his family and to play for Milan.
'This is for Mario because we love Mario and he deserves to have this chance.'
Berlusconi has already apologised to Balotelli for suggesting he could be a ‘rotten apple’ in the dressing-room following his well-publicised problems at the Etihad Stadium.
Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has described the imminent signing of Mario Balotelli as a 'dream come true'.
Quoted on the club's website, he said: 'I certainly do not have to introduce Mario Balotelli.
'It is a dream come true and something that we all wanted, with the president Silvio Berlusconi at the forefront.
'With the arrival of Mario, we have strengthened our team a lot.
'We have worked so hard and Mario has been in our hearts for a long time and finally we have succeeded in signing him.'

And Massimo Moratti, chairman of Inter Milan who sold Balotelli to City, believes he will be a good signing for their rivals.

‘It was a good business for Milan,’ said Moratti. ‘We already had him, so we didn't need him. He can be useful to Berlusconi for many reasons.’

A cruel twist for Real: Ronaldo risks missing Wednesday's Clasico with ankle injury

By Declan Warrington

|

Cristiano Ronaldo's ankle injury could keep him out of the first leg of Real Madrid's Copa del Rey semi-final against Barcelona on Wednesday.
The forward, at £80million the world's most expensive player, twisted his ankle in yesterday's 4-0 league victory over Getafe in which he scored a perfect hat-trick - right foot, left foot and header - in just 10 minutes.
That means that to play him at the Bernabeu on Wednesday would be a risk but the fact it is the latest instalment of El Clasico may persuade Real to gamble on their star man.
Pivotal: Ronaldo is the key player in Real Madrid's drive for success

Ronaldo was substituted shortly after scoring the third of his goals in a move the club described as 'precautionary'.
His ankle was instantly treated with ice to minimise any potential damage and there remains hope he will play but any time on the sidelines would represent a significant blow to under-pressure manager Jose Mourinho.

On Wednesday, Real begin a run of fixtures that will define their season – they face league matches with Sevilla and Barca, both legs of their Champions League knockout clash against Manchester United and then the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final with Barca.
The first leg would also be the latest battle between Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, the two best players in the world.

Real assistant Aitor Karanka attempted to dismiss fears about Ronaldo's potential absence, however.

A sinister airborne surveillance camera gives the U.S. military the ability to track movements in an entire city like a real-time Google Street View.
The ARGUS-IS array can be mounted on unmanned drones to capture an area of 15 sq/miles in an incredible 1,800MP - that's 225 times more sensitive than an iPhone camera.
From 17,500ft the remarkable surveillance system can capture objects as small as 6in on the ground and allows commanders to track movements across an entire battlefield in real time.

'It is important for the public to know that some of these capabilities exist,' said Yiannis Antoniades, the BAE engineer who designed the system, in a recent PBS broadcast.
The aerospace and weapons company developed the ARGUS-IS array as part of a $18.5million project funded by the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa).

A 37-year-old footballer collapsed and died on the pitch - just days after posing for a picture with his five-month-old daughter.
Mike Rodman, from Wootton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, collapsed ten minutes into the game on Saturday as his girlfriend Lauren Workman, 23, looked on in horror with baby Eva.
Despite extensive CPR Mike, who was player-manager of Bristol-based Kingswood AFC reserves, died shortly afterwards.
Club chairman Rob Bateman, who watched the tragedy unfold, said: 'I saw him just fall to the floor face first, there wasn't another player near him.
'We all rushed onto the pitch. It was such an awful thing to witness - really, really horrible.
'Someone started CPR on him straight away, and the ambulance turned up about 15 minutes afterwards and took over.
'They were working for 50 minutes. Everyone in the teams knew everyone else because it was a local derby, Charfield are our great rivals.
'There was no response. It was dreadful. It is a terrible loss. Mike has given ten years' unbroken service to the club and has helped us drive into the great success we have had over the past decade.
'When we got into the Gloucestershire County League we won a cup final in our first year, and Mike scored a 35-yarder. His death is a total shock

Arsene Wenger on the Hazard-ballboy incident

"Both were wrong. The ball boys are there to get the ball back as quickly to the players and into the game, they are not there to waste time. You have to educate the ball boys, that no matter if it is the home team or the away team, you have to get the ball back as quickly as possible.

"Everything else is not acceptable. For the rest, Hazard is not a violent player. He wanted to get the ball back as quickly as possible, which you can understand. In my opinion, he went in a little bit too strongly but I don't think he wanted to hurt the ball boy. He just wanted to get the ball back as quickly as possible."

"Yes, we should not become ridiculous there. He did not want to harm anybody. You finish the story with the red card."

Chelsea told to forget about building stadium at redeveloped Earls Court

Stamford Bridge: Capacity well below the homes of rivals
Stamford Bridge: Capacity well below the homes of rivals

Chelsea's hopes of building a new stadium on the site of the Earls Court Exhibition Centre have been dashed for good.
The area, close to the club's current Stamford Bridge stadium, was earmarked as a potential new home along with a site at the derelict Battersea Power Station.
That south London landmark was sold to a Malaysian consortium last year, though, and Hammersmith and Fulham Council have now confirmed Earls Court will be used for 7,583 new homes.
A statement from the Council read: "The Earls Court landowners, H&F Council and Capco, are committed to the regeneration of the Earls Court Opportunity Area in line with the masterplan.
"It is the firm intention of the two landowners to proceed with this landmark regeneration, creating 9,500 permanent new jobs and around 36,000 temporary construction jobs.
"Neither of the two landowners believes that the inclusion of a football stadium in the scheme would offer the regeneration benefits of the existing masterplan."
Council Leader Nicholas Botterill said: "There really is no place for Chelsea within the Earls Court redevelopment and it remains the council's firm belief that the future of Chelsea is best served at their historic home."
Stamford Bridge holds fewer than 42,000, a capacity well below those at Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City and Newcastle.

Manchester United consider Victor Wanyama bid after Sir Alex Ferguson watches Celtic star

Victor Wanyama: Scored in front of Sir Alex Ferguson on Tuesday
Victor Wanyama: Scored in front of Sir Alex Ferguson on Tuesday

Sky Bet

Sky Sports understands that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson made a personal check on Celtic's Victor Wanyama, and is now weighing up a bid for the midfielder.
Wanyama has been one of the stars of the season and has played a huge part in Celtic's progression beyond the Champions League group stages.
The Scottish champions have been trying to tie him down to a new deal but, with no agreement on the horizon, a host of England's top clubs have been tracking his progress.
Now, after receiving glowing reports from his scouts, including his brother Martin - his chief scout - Ferguson took the chance to watch him in action against Dundee United and Wanyama impressed by scoring in a 4-0 win.
Now United are believed to be one of a number of clubs who could yet make a late swoop for Wanyama, with Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool all believed to be keeping close tabs on him although it is understood a move for the Celtic ace would need to be made by the weekend.
However, Sky Sports understands that, because Wanyama is Kenyan, his work permit, which is more than likely to be granted, would need to go to appeal as his country are ranked outside the world's top 70, which is a criteria set in the UK.
So, in order to finalise a deal for Wanyama, a bid would need to be made prior to next Thursday's deadline and most likely by the weekend to give the process enough time to be completed.
